Does Windshield Washer Fluid Have Antifreeze?

There are some windshield washer fluids that contain some small amount of antifreeze. These types of washer fluids are commonly referred to as “washer fluid antifreeze”.  However, antifreeze can dissolve paint, so while it is safe to put antifreeze into the windshield washer reservoir, it’s not recommended to pour in without a store bought brand mixture.

Always ensure that the washer fluid is specifically labeled to contain antifreeze before purchase and use.

However, note that normal washer fluids and antifreeze itself should not be used interchangeably. Antifreeze contains a high amount of alcohol, such as methanol, that if poured into the washer fluid reservoir, could cause damage. The antifreeze could also potentially damage the windshield, as it is more potent than a normal washer fluid.
