Can You Get A Ticket For A Broken Windshield

Can police ticket you for having a broken windshield? The short answer is yes. There are some general specifications on what constitutes the need for getting a ticket though.

It may vary by state, but generally a police officer can give you a ticket if the crack is deemed to be impairing your range of sight, thus causing unnecessary increased risk to yourself and other people.

Is it illegal to drive with a broken windshield in Arizona?

In Phoenix and the rest of Arizona, it is not illegal, but not recommended. Here are some reasons why having a cracked windshield can be considered dangerous and cause you to get a ticket….

  1. Structural Weakness -The windshield contributes to the structural integrity of the vehicle, helping to hold it together during an accident. When the glass is in one piece, it helps support the impact resistance of the vehicle. An unrepaired crack may weaken the glass, causing it to break easier.
  2. Visual Impairment – A crack can cause visual impairment and distraction to the driver, increasing the risk of an accident.  A crack may be considered a visual impairment if it exceeds 1.5 inches in diameter and has a cross section from another crack.
  3. Size Of The Crack -If the crack is within 6 inches from the edge of the window where the window meets the car and/or the glass has a cross section crack in it, the windshield must be replaced.
